The 6th edition of Winifred Awosika Foundation’s Regional Junior Scrabble Tournament for Schools was held on Saturday 22nd February 2020, at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall l, Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.
The annual event is aimed at developing the critical thinking, vocabulary and mental preparedness of school pupils. According to the organisers, the game of Scrabble not only allows the players to think critically, it also improves their brainpower. WAFSTS has since its inception become a breeding ground for scrabble players who have subsequently won both national and international honours for the country. This year’s edition came to a climactic end as Beulah Allswell of Rayfield International Primary School, Akwa Ibom emerged as the winner of the tournament. Emmanuella Bala (Faithway Primary School, Niger State) and Onibudo Demilade (Chrisland School, VGC, Lagos) took the 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Others in the top 10 include Charles Maxwell (Obalodu School, Lagos), Oyinlade Adewunmi (Capstone School, Lagos), Elizabeth Echeta (Faithway Primary School, Niger State), Chibuchi Onwusonye (Obalodu School, Lagos), Shantelle Ukhubetine (Mastersville School, Lagos), Ebe Michael (Chrisland School, Ladipo Oluwole) and Atashili Temiloluwa (Chrisland School, VGC). The top four winners went home with ₦250,000 (1st place), ₦150,000 (2nd place), ₦100,000 (3rd Place) and ₦50,000 (4th place) while contestants who placed between 5th and 10th went home with ₦10,000 in cash prizes.
